La Palapa

La Palapa is a casual yet fine dining beach front restaurant located on Los Muertos beach. While we have been vacationing in Puerto Vallarta for years, it was not until we purchased a home and really settled in that we checked out this popular restaurant. I’m not sure why we never stopped here before because I can’t think of a better place to watch the sunset and enjoy a nice cocktail or glass of wine.

Opened in 1959, La Palapa was the first beach front restaurant in Puerto Vallarta. Over the years this restaurant has gone through many changes but has always stayed in the Perez family. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner but also has palapas on the beach for anyone who wants to enjoy a day in the sun.

First off, we decided to stop in for a cocktail before hitting the town. I enjoyed a beautiful pomegranate margarita, well ok I had two! I’m not sure if it’s nightly, but there was live music consisting of a guitar/singer and a flute player. A very nice non-smooth jazz like setting to a peaceful evening.

Since we enjoyed our cocktails so much, we decided to have a nice dinner there our last night before heading back to Canada. What can I say, the food was outstanding. Everything from the service to the presentation, it was all amazing.

And to top it off, what a great place to watch the sunset. Now, if you are looking for a romantic evening with your loved ones then look no further. As soon as happy hour is over, La Palapa cleans the day away and transforms the beach into a romantic setting complete with candles and rattan flooring. All things said, La Palapa is celebrating its 50th anniversary and it’s easy to see why. Whether its brunch, a day in the sun, or a romantic evening I highly recommend visiting this 50 year old landmark on Los Muertos beach.
